Cogeneration

Cogeração

The current offer is focused on the production and marketing activities of electrical and thermal power (steam and hot water), providing solutions that foster the reduction of energy costs and release capital expenditure capacity to industrial clients

Assets

The assets of this business include five cogeneration plants, four of which are under operation: Carriço, Powercer, Energin and Sinecogeração cogeneration plants, which have a joint capacity of 160 MW.

In 2010, these cogeneration plants had an electrical power production of 1,202 GWh and a natural gas consumption of 414 million m3. The Galp Energia group achieved the status of one of the largest industrial clients of natural gas in Portugal. Currently, these plants are Galp Energia's single source of electric power generation under special regime, ie with priority access to the grid and sale at a regulated tariff.

Capital expenditure

In order to improve the energy efficiency of both Portuguese refineries, Galp Energia has planned the construction of two cogeneration plant - Sinecogeração and Portcogeração, located in the Sines and Matosinhos refineries, respectively.

The development of the cogeneration plants is part of the technical update of Galp Energia's refining complex and it is planned that both plants will make the supply of electrical and thermal energy more reliable and it will raise energy efficiency as well as allow the environmental licensing of the plants in terms of compliance with Large Combustion Plants Directive.

The cogeneration plants of the Sines and Matosinhos refineries will be the largest ones in Portugal. Therefore, Galp Energia will be the main user of the cogeneration technology in Portugal.

Carriço cogeração started operating in March 2004. Galp Energia has a 65% stake and the remaining 35% are owned by EDP

Its main client is Renoeste, a salt processing unit located at Carriço, Pombal. The plant has a gas turbine with 32 MW of electric power and a heat recovery boiler with 43 MW of hot water production.

Since the come on stream, the plant has had an annual production of c. 210 GWh of electrical power and of c. 300 GWh of thermal power and consumed close to 53 million m3 of natural gas.

In 2007 an evaporative cooler of the entrance air in the turbine in the cogeneration plant was installed, thereby increasing the production of the cogeneration plant and the efficiency of the turbine and decreasing CO2 and NOx emissions, which improved the plant's environmental performance.

Powercer

Powercer's cogeneration plant started operating in 2004, having as a client of thermal power Sociedade Central de Cervejas, which owns an industrial production plant of beer, light drinks and water located in Vialonga, Vila Franca de Xira

This cogeneration plant is 70% owned by Galp Energia and the remaining 30% are owned by Finerge. Since the come on stream, the plant fulfilled the agreed performances, namely electric power, the specific fuel consumption and the production of steam and emissions.

The cogeneration plant has a gas turbine with 7.2 MW of electric power and a heat recovery boiler with a maximum capacity of 30 ton/h of steam production. The plant has had a satisfying performance, delivering an annual production of c. 40 GWh of electrical power and c. 120 GWh of thermal power and consuming close to 18 million m3 of natural gas.

Regarding quality, Powercer, SA has supplied Sociedade Central de Cervejas without interruptions by successfully responding to energy breakdowns of its own network and guaranteeing the reliability of the supply of electrical power.

After the positive experience at the Carriço cogeneration, an evaporative cooler of the entrance air in the turbine was installed in the Powercer cogeneration plant. With this system, an increase in electrical power generation and efficiency is expected.

Energin, S.A. - Sociedade de Produção de Electricidade e Calor - owns a cogeneration plant whose main activity is the production, under cogeneration, and the sale of electrical and thermal power

The Energin, SA project is part of the energy optimisation of Solvay Portugal – Produtos Químicos, S.A., which owns an industrial compound in Póvoa de Santa Iria, in the council of Vila Franca de Xira. The cogeneration plant is 65% owned by EDP and the remaining 35% are owned by Galp Energia.

This plant started operating in March 2002. Since the come on stream, the plant has fulfilled the contractual obligations to the client, namely electric power, the specific consumption of fuel and the production of steam and emissions.

The cogeneration plant has a gas turbine with 42 MW of electric power and a heat recovery boiler with a maximum capacity of 120 ton/h of steam production. Since the come on stream, the plant has had very satisfactory performances, delivering an annual production of c. 300 GWh of electrical power and c. 600 GWh of thermal power and consuming close to 90 million m3 of natural gas.

Sinecogeração

The construction of the cogeneration plant in the Sines refinery was started in 2006 and it came on stream in October 2009. This plant is wholly owned by Galp Energia

The cogeneration plant is part of the industrial compound of the Sines refinery, which will be its main client in the supply of thermal power as steam and will benefit from the increase in the reliability of the electrical power supply to industrial units.

The development of this cogeneration project is an improvement of the operational performance of the Sines refinery and a significant decrease in running costs. The main goals are:

  • Energy efficiency: Improvement of the Energy Intensity indices of the Sines refinery;
  • Environmental impact: Decrease in the SOx and NOx emissions of the Sines refinery allowing the environmental licensing and the fulfilment of the European Union Large Combustion Plant Directive;
  • Reliability: Increase in the reliability of the supply of electrical power and steam to the Sines refinery;
  • Technological upgrade: Upgrade of the utilities plant of Sines refinery, according to best practices in the sector.

The cogeneration plant has two gas turbines with a combined capacity of80 MW and two heat recovery boilers with a maximum capacity of 250 ton/h of steam production.

In 2010, the plant used about 252 million cubic metres of natural gas with an availability rate of 100% and supplied the Sines refinery with 1.9 million tonnes of steam. The entire production from the plant’s gas turbines was delivered to the public grid.

Portcogeração

The construction of the cogeneration plant of the Matosinhos refinery was started in 2009 and the start of the commercial exploitation is scheduled by the end of 2011. This cogeneration plant is wholly owned by Galp Energia

The cogeneration plant of the industrial compound of the Matosinhos refinery, which will be its main client in the supply of thermal power under steam and will benefit from the increase in reliability of the supply of electrical power to the industrial units.

The development of the current cogeneration project is an improvement of the operational performance of the refinery and a significant decrease in running costs. The main goals are:

  • Energy efficiency: Improvement of the Energy Intensity indices of the Matosinhos refinery;
  • Environmental impact: Decrease in the SOx and NOx emissions of the Matosinhos refinery allowing the environmental licensing and the fulfilment of the European Union Large Combustion Plant Directive;
  • Reliability: Increase in the reliability of the supply of electrical power and steam to the Matosinhos refinery;
  • Technological upgrade: Upgrade of the utilities plant of Matosinhos refinery, according to best practices in the sector;
  • Access to the electrical and natural gas networks: Increase in the connection capacity to the electrical and natural gas networks, with benefits for the Matosinhos refinery conversin project.

The cogeneration plant has two gas turbines with a combined capacity of 80 MW and two heat recovery boilers with a maximum capacity of 260 ton/h of steam production.
