Exploration & Production

The exploration work in Angola has already led to over 25 discoveries

Galp Energia participates in five projects in Angola side by side with some of the world's most prestigious oil companies. Out of these five offshore projects, block 14 stands out for its current production and growth prospects. Also important are the projects under exploration and development in block 14K–A–IMI and block 32. In 2008 Galp Energia started exploration of Angola LNG II, where Galp Energia has a stake of 10%. Angola plays a major role for Galp Energia, both for its track record and medium and long-term prospects.

Main events

  • Concessões de petróleo em AngolaPresence since 1982 in the consortium for block 1/82, where the Safueiro discovery was in production until 2002;
  • Partnership with Chevron, Eni, Sonangol and Total for five projects - four offshore blocks and a gas exploration project, Angola LNG II;
  • Total block area: 10,624 km2;
  • Over 25 discoveries in Angola, of which 12 in block 14 and 14 in block 32;
  • Membership of the consortium that discovered the first production well in Angola's deep water, in the Kuito field, in 1997;
  • Production regime: PSA.

Bloco de exploração em AngolaConsortium: Galp Energia (9.0%), Chevron (Operator, 31.0%), Eni (20.0%), Total (20.0%) and Sonangol (20.0%)

Area: 4,091 km2

Location: Deep water

Water depth: 200 – 2,000 metres

This block, where Galp Energia has produced oil since December 1999, is composed of eight areas of development: Kuito, Benguela-Belize-Lobito-Tomboco (BBLT), Tômbua-Lândana, Negage, Gabela, Malange, Lucapa and Menongue.

One of the main projects under way at block 14 is the development of Tômbua-Lândana field. The production of this field started in August 2009.

Bloco de exploração em AngolaConsortium: Galp Energia (5.0%), Total (Operator, 30.0%), China Sonangol (20,0%), Marathon Oil (10.0%), Sonangol (20.0%) e Exxon (15.0%)

Area: 5,090 km2

Location: Ultra deep water

Water depth: 1,400 – 2,000 metres

In block 32, 14 discoveries have already been made. The geographic dispersion requires a technical development concept that unites several discoveries.

The consortium made significant progress towards determining a technical development concept for the Centre South East (CSE) cluster. Approval of the Conceptual Development Plan (CDP) was by the consortium and the concession holder will reduce the range of options and enable advancement of the project on the basis of a single concept.

In 2012, an extension was authorised for the exploration period of the Central North East (NE) area for two periods of three and two years, in order to investigate the potential of the identified prospects.

Bloco de exploração em AngolaConsortium: Galp Energia (4.5%), Chevron Overseas Congo LTD (Operator, 15.75%), CABGOC (15.5%), Sonangol (10.0%), SNPC (7.5%), TFE (10,0%), TEPC (26.75%) and Eni (10.0%)

Area: 700 km2

Location: Deep water

Depth: 500 – 1,000 metres

Block 14K–A–IMI is located on the border between Angola and Congo.

In terms of development engineering, the proposed technical solutions place this project at the forefront of the industry. The technical option adopted for the development of the project was to connect the discovery with the BBLT platform.

Angola LNG II is the first integrated natural gas project to be developed in Angola by the consortium composed by Galp Energia (10.0%), Sonagás (Operator, 40.0%), Eni (20.0%), Gas Natural (20.0%) and Exem (10.0%). In the first phase, the exploration and research of natural gas reservoirs located at the Angolan North's offshore is scheduled for the first phase.

After this phase and the evaluations' completion, the building of a liquid bulk terminal will be considered, if warranted by quantities found in the research and exploration phase.

Bloco de exploração em AngolaConsortium: Galp Energia (5.33%), Total (Operador, 58.67%), Falcon Oil (16.0%) and Sonangol (20.0%)

Area: 746 km2

Location: Ultra deep water

Depth: 1,800 – 2,500 metres

Block 33 is an ultra deep water block located at Angola's offshore. The seismic interpretation was undertook in the first exploration period, which finished in March 2005, and two exploration wells were drilled. Only the Calulu – 1 well was declared commercial. The concession holder approved a five-year extension for the evaluation of the discovered area. The rest of the block was abandoned.
